Window film care & cleaning instructions · 3M film, Fasara & DI-NOC
Keep it clear. Keep the warranty.
Everything a building or homeowner needs to know about living with film and finishes Epic installed: when to clean, what to clean with, what never to use, and when to send us a photo instead of a sponge.
- Wait 30 days before the first cleaning
- Glass cleaner or mild soap · soft cloth · squeegee dry
- No blades, abrasives, adhesives or pressure washing
Film cures. Leave it alone while it does.
Freshly installed film is still curing. The mounting solution between the film and the glass evaporates through the film over the first few weeks, and while it does you may see a light haze, small water pockets or a slightly cloudy look. That is normal and it clears on its own — faster in warm, sunny weather, slower in cold or shade, and longer on thicker security films. Do not press the pockets, do not try to squeegee them out, and do not clean the glass at all for the first 30 days after installation.
After 30 days: clean it like glass, gently
- Cleaners 3M recommends: Windex® Original or a similar glass cleaner; 3M™ Glass Cleaner Concentrate #1; isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol diluted 2:1 with water; or water with a few drops of dish soap, used with a squeegee.
- Tools: a clean soft cloth or microfiber, good-quality non-abrasive paper towels, or a synthetic sponge and a rubber squeegee. Light wiping motion, then squeegee dry — never leave the film wet.
- Light pressure: no vigorous rubbing or heavy pressure. The film is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof.
- Seams and frames: wipe along a film splice, not across it. Use a separate towel for frames and sills, and separate cloths and buckets for inside and outside glass. No scraping at the attachment bead.
- Disinfecting: 3M™ Quat, Neutral Quat, HB Quat, RCT and MBS disinfectant cleaner concentrates are approved by 3M for use on properly applied film.
Never on filmed glass
- Knives, razor blades, scrapers, brushes, scouring pads — they cut or scratch the surface and the edge.
- Abrasive or gritty cleaners — powders, pastes and “heavy duty” sprays.
- Any adhesive on the film — tape, stickers, decals, suction cups, hooks, Command™ strips. Removing them damages the film and voids the 3M warranty.
- Pressure washers or steam — water forced at the edge can lift the film or the attachment.
- Cheap brown paper towels or newspaper — they scratch; use cloth or good-quality towels.
- Washing in the first 30 days — adhesion is still building.

Nothing sticks to the film. Ask us instead.
The most common way filmed glass gets damaged in a school or an office is not a cleaner — it is a sign. Tape, a laminated notice, a vinyl door number, a security decal: when it comes off, it pulls at the film, and a lifted edge on security film is a service call. So the rule is simple: nothing is applied directly to the film by anyone but Epic.
When you need something on the glass, we have a product for it. Epic prints door numbers, classroom window numbers, security and visitor decals, hours and temporary notices on a film-safe media made to go over installed film. It applies on top of the safety film without affecting it, holds up to daily use, and when the room number changes it peels off clean — no residue, no lifted edge, no damage to the film underneath.
For one Colorado school district, Epic produced the classroom window numbering for every campus — double-sided, readable from the corridor and from outside — plus the security decals they wanted in the entry glass and reusable holders for temporary flyers, all on the film-safe media and all installed by Epic’s crews. If you have signage going up on filmed glass, send us the list before anyone reaches for the tape.
Architectural finishes on walls, doors and cabs
Dust with a dry microfiber. For marks, use a soft cloth with water and a neutral detergent, wipe, then dry. Clean spills and hand oils promptly; on metallic and gloss finishes wipe with the grain. No abrasive pads, scouring powders, solvents, bleach, strong alkaline cleaners or steam. Protect high-traffic corners with guards — DI-NOC is tough, not armor.
Frosted, patterned and gradient glass finishes
Cleaned exactly like window film: 30-day cure, soft cloth, glass cleaner or mild soap, no scrapers. Cut logos and room names are part of the film — do not pick at edges. Frost shows fingerprints more than clear glass; a quick dry wipe keeps it even.
Prestige Exterior, Silver Exterior and other exterior films
Rinse with a hose at normal pressure, clean with a soft brush on a pole or a soft cloth and mild soap, squeegee dry. No pressure washers, scrapers, de-icers or solvents. Tell your window-cleaning contractor the glass is filmed — the same rules apply to them.
The attachment is part of the system
Do not cut, paint over, caulk over or pull at the sealant bead at the frame. If the bead is damaged, film is lifting at an edge, or a pane is broken, leave it alone and call Epic — the film has done its job holding the glass, and the repair is a service call, not a cleaning job.
What voids it, and what doesn’t.
Adhesives of any kind on the film — tape, stickers, suction cups, hooks, Command™ strips — plus knives, scrapers and abrasives, pressure washing at the edges, paint or caulk over the film or the attachment, and repairs or re-work by anyone other than a 3M authorized dealer. Normal use, normal cleaning with the products above, and normal weather are what the 3M commercial warranty and Epic’s 100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee are for. Full terms by film, DI-NOC and Fasara are on the warranty page.
Something looks wrong? Send a photo.
A haze that has not cleared after 60 days, a bubble that is growing, a lifted edge, a scratch, a broken pane: email a photo with the building address, or use the form. A real person replies within one business day, and a Certified Installation Specialist — never a subcontractor — handles the visit.
