3M™ window film warranty · terms by film, registered by Epic

The warranty is 3M’s. Keeping it valid is ours.

Every film Epic installs is a genuine 3M product with a published 3M warranty behind it. Here is what it covers, how long it runs on each film, what voids it, and what Epic does on every job so it holds up when you need it.

  • Residential: lifetime of the original owner
  • Commercial: 10 to 15 years, by film

What the 3M warranty covers

Four warranties, one document.

3M publishes one bulletin for every flat-glass window film it makes. It bundles four separate promises, and the one most buyers never hear about — glass breakage — is the one that matters most to a facilities director.

Performance

The installed film will adhere without blistering, cracking, peeling, bubbling, lifting, curling or delaminating, and will hold its clarity and color without discoloration, excessive fading or loss of reflectivity. The attachment sealant, where applied, keeps its bond without cracking or peeling. Runs for the period in the table below.

Glass thermal shock

If a pane breaks from thermal stress as a direct result of the film, 3M reimburses replacement glass and labor up to $1,500 per window residential and $2,000 per window commercial, for five years from installation. Requires a completed glass questionnaire at registration — which is why Epic checks glass type on every survey.

Seal failure

If your glass manufacturer voids its insulated-glass seal warranty because film was applied, 3M matches it, capped at the same $1,500 / $2,000 per window including labor, for 10 years residential or 3 years commercial. The manufacturer’s coverage is used first if it is still in force.

Basic product

The film and the attachment sealant conform to 3M’s manufacturing specifications on the day they were made. Removal is not a warranty item: film comes off, adhesive residue is expected, and the remedy for a confirmed defect is a refund or a replacement installed by a 3M-selected authorized dealer.

Terms by film

How long it runs, film by film.

Performance warranty periods from the current 3M bulletin. “Lifetime” on a residence means the lifetime of the original purchaser while they own and occupy the home; it does not transfer and does not cover rentals. Glass breakage coverage is five years and seal failure three years on every commercial film (ten residential).

Residential seal-failure coverage runs 10 years. Exterior-applied films carry fixed terms on residences too, and sloped glass shortens the exterior period as shown. For windstorm, break-and-entry and blast applications, and for single-pane tempered glass, 3M requires its attachment sealant on all four sides of the frame for the security film warranty to apply — the Epic Method installs it that way as standard. Architectural and glass finishes

DI-NOC and Fasara carry their own 3M terms.

Finishes are warranted under 3M’s Commercial Solutions documents rather than the window film bulletin, and the periods are shorter because the products do a different job: they are decorative surfaces in daily contact with people, carts and cleaning crews, not a film sealed against glass.

3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes

Interior, vertical installations are warranted by 3M for 12 years against visual and adhesive defects, excessive fading or discoloration, cracking, yellowing and delamination — when installed by a 3M-certified DI-NOC installer on a properly prepared, sound substrate and maintained to 3M’s cleaning guidance. Exterior-rated EX series finishes carry shorter terms that vary by finish and exposure; Epic states the exact period on the proposal. Normal wear at high-traffic corners and edges is not a defect, which is why Epic specifies corner guards where carts live.

3M™ Fasara™ Glass Finishes

In the United States 3M warrants Fasara against significant discoloration, cracking and similar visual defects for 5 years on interior glass away from the building perimeter and 3 years on perimeter glass that sees direct sun; newer designs carry 3 years and 1 year respectively, the two black designs (Illumina Black and Opaque Black) 2 years, and the four exterior-rated frosts 3 years outdoors. Fasara is vertical-only — non-vertical applications are not warranted. Expected service life is longer than the warranty: 3M puts it at five to twenty years indoors depending on the design.

What keeps a finish warranty valid

  • Certified installer. 3M trains and certifies DI-NOC installers through hands-on training; Epic’s Certified Installation Specialists hold it, which keeps the 3M warranty valid.
  • Record of installation. Substrate, primer, finish codes and date, completed at closeout. Epic keeps it and gives you a copy.
  • Fresh material. DI-NOC installed within its shelf life from a 3M-authorized supply; no lookalike film.
  • 3M cleaning only. Neutral detergent and water, no solvents, scouring pads, bleach or steam. The care page has the full list.
  • Report it in writing within 30 days of noticing a defect, before anything is removed or repaired.

What voids it

Short list. Easy to stay on the right side of.

3M’s exclusions are the same for every film, and almost all of them come down to two things: putting something on the film that should not be there, or letting someone who is not an authorized dealer touch it.

  • Ignoring the care guidelines. Coverage is conditional on 3M’s inspection, cleaning and maintenance guidance. No washing for 30 days; after that, glass cleaner, soft cloth, squeegee. The care page is the whole list.
  • Adhesives on the film. Tape, stickers, decals, suction cups, hooks and Command™ strips. If you need numbers, frost or a decal on filmed glass, Epic prints a film-safe layer that goes on and comes off clean.
  • Abrasion. Pressure washing, brushes, scrapers, scouring pads, sandstorms and tree branches on exterior film.
  • Non-3M parts anywhere in the system. Another brand’s attachment, sealant or film substituted in — the most common failure in competitive bids.
  • Splices, curved glass, non-flat surfaces. 3M does not warrant spliced film or film on three-dimensional glass. Epic’s precision-cut panels are one piece per lite.
  • Removal or re-work by anyone but an authorized dealer. Including a well-meaning glazier or custodian.
  • Acts of God, vandalism, misuse, acid rain. Structural movement, floods, fire and windstorms that damage the glazing are insurance events, not warranty events.

What the warranty does not pay for

Even on a valid claim, 3M covers the film, the glass up to the cap, and labor by a 3M-selected dealer. It does not cover moving or reinstalling window treatments, trim or mullions, lighting or furniture, or repainting. Replacement film carries the remaining term of the original warranty, not a new one. The warranty belongs to the original purchaser at the installed address and does not transfer to a new owner or tenant.

Straight talk on what film is

3M’s own bulletin says it plainly, and so do we: security window film is designed to hold broken glass in the frame and make it more difficult for an intruder to get through. It is not bulletproof and it does not prevent every injury or loss. The warranty covers the film’s performance as a product; the protection it provides is a matter of the glass, the frame, the attachment and the installation — which is what the Epic Method is about.

Making a claim

Call Epic first. 3M is the backstop.

Send a photo and the building address to [email protected], call 866.EPIC.117, or use the service request form. A real person replies within one business day, a Certified Installation Specialist handles the visit, and Epic files the claim with 3M and manages it to the end. If you ever cannot reach us, 3M’s window film group is at [email protected] or 1‑866‑499‑8857.

Two timing notes from 3M: film takes 30 days or more to fully cure, so haze and small water pockets in that period are normal, and 3M asks for 90 days before an adhesion or appearance claim. A lifted edge, a broken pane or a growing bubble does not need to wait — call.

Keep these three documents

Why a claim is simple with Epic

Every window has a record — and initials on every step.

Each installer logs every window in Epic’s app and initials each step — cleaning, gasket out, wedges, film, solvent wipe, tape, the structural bead, cleanup. Every building we have worked on is cataloged by room and opening with its measurements and film code, so a repair starts with a photo and a room number, not a re-survey. With your permission, a one-inch Epic tag in the corner tells whoever runs the building next who to call. How the record works →

FAQ

Warranty questions

Who actually issues the warranty — Epic or 3M?
3M. Every film Epic installs is a genuine 3M product and carries the 3M warranty published in 3M’s Flat Glass Applications Warranty Bulletin. Epic’s job is to install it the way the warranty requires, register it with 3M within 30 days, and hand you the certificate. Epic’s own 100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee sits on top of that.
How long is the commercial warranty on security film?
It depends on the film: 10 years on 3M Scotchshield S2400 and the Safety Series, 12 years on Ultra S800 and Ultra Night Vision S25, and 15 years on Ultra Prestige. Exterior-applied safety films are warranted 7 years (5 on sloped glass).
What does “lifetime” mean on a residential warranty?
The lifetime of the original purchaser while they own and occupy the home. It does not transfer to a new owner and does not apply to rental properties. Exterior-applied films are the exception and carry fixed terms.
Does the warranty cover glass that breaks after film goes on?
Yes, within limits. If a pane fails from thermal stress as a direct result of the film, 3M’s glass thermal-shock warranty reimburses up to $1,500 per window on a residence and $2,000 per window on a commercial building, glass and labor, for five years from installation — provided the film was recommended for that glass and the glass questionnaire was completed at registration. That questionnaire is why Epic checks glass type and construction at the free survey and never skips it.
Will film void my window manufacturer’s seal warranty?
If the glass manufacturer voids its seal-failure coverage because film was applied, 3M matches the manufacturer’s seal warranty — capped at $1,500 (residential) or $2,000 (commercial) per window, including labor — for 10 years on a residence or 3 years on a commercial building, or until the manufacturer’s own warranty would have expired. You have to use the manufacturer’s coverage first if it is still valid.
What voids it?
Not following 3M’s care and cleaning guidelines; adhesives of any kind on the film; abrasion from pressure washing, brushes or scrapers; non-3M products substituted anywhere in the system; splices; film applied to curved or non-flat glass; removing the film or the attachment for any reason other than a warranty replacement by an authorized dealer; and damage from acts of God, vandalism or misuse. Sloped glass does not void coverage but shortens the period on exterior films.
Something looks wrong. What do I do?
Give it 90 days if the issue is haze, small water pockets or appearance — 3M asks for a full cure before an adhesion or optical claim. If it is a lifted edge, a broken pane or a growing bubble, send a photo with the building address to [email protected] or call 866.EPIC.117, or use the service request form. Epic is your first call; 3M is the backstop if you ever cannot reach us.
Can I see the actual 3M document?
Yes. The current 3M Flat Glass Applications Warranty Bulletin (current edition, 2024–2026) is linked on this page, and the warranty terms for your specific film are printed on every Epic proposal and on the certificate you receive at closeout. Keep the certificate with your proof of purchase and your glass manufacturer’s warranty — 3M requires all three for a claim.

This page summarizes the manufacturer’s warranties for your convenience. The governing terms are 3M’s: the 3M™ Window Films Flat Glass Applications Warranty Bulletin (current edition, 2024–2026), the 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes Technical Data Sheet Rev.
