Guide specifications for specifiers · CSI Divisions 08, 09 and 10 · 3M films, finishes and graphics installed by Epic

Specify the film. Specify how it goes in. Specify who.

Five editable CSI sections — attached security film, solar control film, decorative and privacy film, DI-NOC architectural finishes and environmental graphics — written so the project manual names the 3M product, the method and the installation standard in one place, with Epic as the basis of design.

Download the Word file, drop it into your manual, delete the bracketed notes and the options you are not using. Send us the draft and we return it marked for your glass, frames and threat or performance criteria, opening by opening, at no charge.

  • Who installs: the manufacturer’s highest-tier dealer, employee installers certified in-house, film cut in the shop
  • The record: every opening logged and photographed at closeout; warranty registered within 30 days
  • What it is not: no bulletproof, bullet-resistant or F3561-compliant language anywhere in the section
  • Finishes and graphics: pattern-specific fire reports, shop drawings, full-size proofs and a mock-up before production; one certified provider for print, cut and install

Why a security film spec has to say how it is attached.

Most security film specifications name a product and stop. The bid that wins runs a bead of sealant over the factory gasket, because nothing in the section said not to, and the owner finds out what that is worth on the day it is tested.

The 08 87 23 section closes that gap in Part 3. It requires the interior gasket removed in full, cork wedges driven into the open channel and cut flush, the bond surfaces cleaned with a solvent that actually removes gasket oil, and the structural bead tooled into the open channel so it bonds film, glass and clean frame and keys mechanically into the frame. It requires the installer to flag, in writing, any opening whose frame cannot take an adequate bead. And it requires the installed-opening record at closeout, so the building has a way to maintain the system for the life of the warranty. Those are the differences between a film job and a security system, and they are enforceable because they are written down.

The 08 87 13 solar section does the equivalent for comfort and energy work: the glass-compatibility and thermal-stress review before film is cut, shop-cut film kitted by opening, the visual quality standard, the manufacturer’s glass-breakage and seal-failure coverage, and — where the owner wants the number defended — the building-specific energy analysis and data-logger verification.

FAQ

Specifier questions

What format are the guide specifications in?
CSI three-part format (Part 1 General, Part 2 Products, Part 3 Execution) under MasterFormat Division 08 — Section 08 87 23 for attached safety and security film and Section 08 87 13 for solar control film. Each is delivered as an editable Word file for your project manual and as a PDF. Specifier notes are bracketed and italic; delete them and the unused options before issue.
Why does the security film section specify the installation method, not just the film?
Because the film is not the variable. A roll of 3M S2400 performs the same in anyone’s hands; whether it stays in the frame under a ram or a pressure wave depends entirely on how the attachment was installed. Most specifications name a film and say “install per manufacturer’s instructions,” which lets a bidder run a bead over the gasket. The Epic section specifies the gasket out, the cork wedges, the clean substrate and the bead tooled into the open channel — the Epic Method — so the bid is for the system you meant.
Can a competitor bid against this specification?
Yes, if they can meet it: an authorized dealer of the film manufacturer at its highest tier, employee installers certified on the attachment method, film cut to each opening in the shop, the installed-opening record at closeout, and the attachment installed with the interior gasket removed. Those are quality requirements, not a sole-source device. The substitution paragraph is written so you can allow or forbid equals as the project requires.
Will Epic review a draft section for a specific project?
Yes, at no charge. Send the glass and frame types, the openings and the performance criteria (forced entry, blast level, windstorm, or solar targets) and a Solutions Advisor returns the section marked for the project, with the film and bead size by opening and any opening we would flag as not able to take an adequate structural bead.
Which section do I use for frost, wall coverings or a branded wall?
Frost, privacy bands, gradients and custom-cut frost graphics on glass: 08 87 26. 3M DI-NOC finish film over walls, columns, doors and elevator cabs: 09 72 00. Printed wall murals, perforated or printed window graphics, floor graphics and wayfinding: 10 14 00. They are written to work together on one project — a glass-walled office might carry all three plus 08 87 23 on the entry glass — and each names Epic as the single provider so print, cut and installation are one responsibility.
Do these cover custom graphics from our own brand standards?
Yes. 08 87 26 and 10 14 00 both require the Installer to prepare print- or cut-ready files from the Owner’s brand standards, proof them at full size and mock up one panel in place before production. Epic designs, prints, cuts and installs in-house; the spec card for each film family is on the Resources page.
