3M™ Safety Film Series · installed by Epic
When glass breaks, it stays put.
Clear 4-, 7- and 8-mil safety films for human-impact codes, spontaneous breakage and everyday glass hazards — interior and exterior grades.
Not every opening needs forced-entry film. Classroom doors, corridor glass, overhead lites and older annealed glass need to meet human-impact codes and hold together if they break. The Safety Film Series does exactly that: clear polyester films from 4 to 8 mil that keep broken glass in one sheet instead of on the floor. Where the risk is break-in, Epic moves you up to S140, Ultra S800 or S2400 with the Epic Method attachment; where it is breakage, these films are the right-sized answer.
- Classroom doors and corridor glass
- Overhead and sloped glazing
- Older annealed glass that fails code
- Balcony and skylight glass (exterior)
3M Safety Series rating
What it does, and where it belongs.
S40, S70 and S80 are optically clear polyester safety films that pass the ANSI Z97.1 Class B 150 ft-lb impact test on annealed glass, which is how existing glass is upgraded toward human-impact safety glazing requirements without replacement. S40 and S70 are also made in exterior grades with a weatherable adhesive for balcony glass, skylights and the outer pane of an insulated unit. 3M does not rate these films for windstorm or blast; that is what the attached security films are for.
Why buildings choose 3M Safety Series
- Holds broken glass: Shards stay bonded to the film instead of falling or flying.
- Code compliance: Upgrades existing annealed glass toward human-impact safety glazing requirements (ANSI Z97.1 Class B).
- Invisible: 86–87% visible light, no tint, no change to the look of the glass.
- Interior or exterior: S40 and S70 available in exterior grades for glass that cannot be reached from inside.
- UV protection: Blocks 99% of UV.
How Epic installs this film
Safety films are bonded to the glass by Epic-employed Certified Installation Specialists, precision-cut and kitted by opening. Because 3M does not approve the Safety Series for windstorm or blast applications, Epic installs it without the structural attachment — and specifies S140, Ultra S800 or S2400 with 3M IPA installed the Epic way wherever an opening needs forced-entry, blast or windstorm performance. The survey tells you which openings are which.
What sets 3M Safety Series apart
- Right-sized protection — 4, 7 and 8 mil: match the film to the hazard, not the catalog.
- Tear resistance — Polyester construction engineered to hold under impact.
- Durable hard coat — Scratch-resistant for routine cleaning.
- Epic installation — Precision-cut, kitted and installed by Epic’s in-house, certified crews.
- Upgrade path — Same installer, same crew when an opening calls for security film and attachment.

Drag the handle. Only the glass changes; the bars show how much light and heat still come through with this film. Switch shades or series to compare.
3M Scotchshield safety and security films. The security films (S2400, Ultra S800, S140 and the Ultra solar-safety films) are installed with the Epic Method attachment; the S40, S70 and S80 safety films are bonded to the glass for breakage and human-impact protection. Clear films leave the glass looking unchanged; the Ultra films add Prestige or Night Vision sun control to the same layer. Eleven films.

Rendering is computed from the film’s published optical values applied only to the glass in each photo (clear-glass baseline: 88% VLT, 8% exterior reflectance). This is a simulation; actual appearance varies with glass type, sun angle and shade — we put real samples on your real glass before you decide.

Performance testing
- ANSI Z97.1 Class B impact (150 ft-lb) — applied to either side of the glass
- ASTM D882 tensile and break strength
- ASTM D1044 abrasion resistance
- ASTM G26 / G90 weathering (exterior grades)
Per 3M published data. Values vary by shade and glass type; representative shade shown. No window film is bulletproof or bullet-resistant.

3M S2400
The only polyurethane security film we know of — every other security film on the market is polyester (PET). About 4X the elongation (560% vs 130%) and two-thirds more Graves tear resistance (24.6 vs 14.8 lbf·in) than a 22-mil PET security film, by 3M’s published data — and installed anchored to the frame with the Epic Method, never film-only.
View →3M Ultra S800
The 3M security film tested for blast, impact and seismic events — installed anchored to the frame, never film-only.
View →3M Ultra Prestige
The Prestige solar stack bonded to a micro-layered safety film — one installation for heat, UV and glass retention.
View →On classroom doors, corridor and overhead glass, commercial and retail glass and homes where the hazard is breakage and human impact, not break-in. Where an opening needs forced-entry, blast or windstorm performance, Epic specifies S140, Ultra S800 or S2400 with 3M IPA installed the Epic way; buy either through cooperative contracts.
