Decorative window film · decorative glass film, gradients, patterns and color

Glass that looks designed, not covered.

Decorative window film is a patterned, textured, gradient or colored film applied to the glass you already have. It gives a conference room, lobby, exam room or front door privacy and a look at the same time. Epic installs the 3M Fasara decorative line and, when the design you want isn’t in the book, prints and cuts it in-house, for offices, healthcare, schools, retail, hospitality and homes, nationwide.

Decorative window film, defined

What is decorative window film?

Decorative window film puts a pattern on glass on purpose. Where a plain frost simply hides the view, a decorative film decides how much to hide and how the glass looks doing it: a gradient that is dense at eye level and clear at the top, a stripe that reads from across the room, a stone or fabric texture that matches the finishes, or your own artwork.

Decorative glass film and deco film are the same thing. A plain, uniform frost is the simplest member of the family; see frosted window film. Printed full-color designs and logos are printed window graphics; custom frost logos and room names are covered under custom glass graphics.

Custom decorative film

Not in the book? Epic makes it.

The 3M catalog is a place to start. If you want part of a design, a different scale, your brand color or something nobody has made yet, Epic designs it, prints it in-house and cuts it to your openings.

Custom decorative work is cut in Epic Precision — proprietary cutting process department, with each piece labeled for its pane. The department was built for security film: a hand cut can leave a nick in the film edge, and a nick is where a film tears when it is ever asked to hold, so the machine removes that human error. On decorative film the payoff is a clean edge and a pattern that lines up from pane to pane. See the printed side of the work at Environmental Graphics.

Decorative film vs new glass

Decorative film or patterned replacement glass?

If the glass is staying, film it. Decorative film goes on the existing pane, usually in a day, with no glazier. Patterned, etched or colored replacement glass means new glass and a longer job, and the design is fixed for the life of the glass.

Film can change with the tenant: 3M describes Fasara as removable. For warranty terms see the warranty page, for cleaning see care and cleaning, and for pricing drivers see what window film costs.

FAQ

Decorative window film questions

What is decorative window film?
A patterned, textured, gradient or colored film applied to existing glass. It does a privacy job and a design job on the same pane: stripes, dots, fabric and stone textures, gradients that fade to clear, or your own logo and artwork. Epic installs the 3M Fasara line and prints and cuts custom designs in-house.
Is decorative glass film the same as deco film?
Yes. Decorative window film, decorative glass film and deco film are names for the same product family. Frosted film is the plain, uniform member of that family; see frosted window film.
Is there colored or tinted decorative film for glass?
Yes. The 3M line includes champagne-gold fabric textures, blue-gray, dark-gray and light-gray gradients and milky tints, and black stripes and textures. For an exact brand color, Epic prints a custom glass graphic in-house.
Does decorative film give privacy?
As much as its pattern covers. A dense texture or a gradient at eye level hides the view well; an open stripe or dot pattern is mostly decoration. Each design’s published light transmission is in the full catalog, and the visualizer shows it on a sample room. For full privacy, choose a frost.
Is decorative film cheaper than replacing the glass?
Usually, and it is much faster. Film goes on the glass you already have, typically in a day, with no glazier and no room out of service. Patterned or etched replacement glass means new glass and a longer job. Film is quoted per pane after a free assessment; see what window film costs for the drivers.
Can you make a custom decorative design?
Yes. Bring a sketch, a brand standard or a photo of something you liked. Epic designs it, prints it in-house and cuts it in Epic Precision — proprietary cutting process department, then installs it with our own crews. See custom frost and glass graphics.
Which decorative film works best on a conference room?
A gradient or a dense texture set at seated eye level is the usual choice: it hides screens and faces and leaves the top of the glass clear for light. For a brand statement, a stripe or a custom pattern in the brand color. A Solutions Advisor brings 3M samples to the room so you can judge them on your own glass.
Will a pattern line up across a run of glass?
It should, and on an Epic job it is planned to. Pattern height and placement are set before cutting, so stripes and textures carry across the mullions at the same line from pane to pane.
Does decorative window film block heat?
Not in a meaningful way. Decorative film is a privacy and design product; for heat, glare and energy, Epic uses a 3M sun-control film, and can plan both for the same building. See solar control film.
Can decorative window film go on a front door?
Yes. Front-door sidelites, bathroom windows and stair windows are common home uses: a pattern adds privacy and looks intended.
Is there decorative window film for restaurants and hotels?
Yes. Booth dividers, private dining glass, lobby partitions and elevator lobbies get textures that match the interior, and Epic prints custom designs when the catalog doesn’t have the right one.
Does decorative window film come in gradients?
Yes. The 3M Fasara Gradation family fades from frost to clear, or steps in density, so the glass is private low and open high with no hard edge.
